“Time and the world do not stand still. Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or the present are certain to miss the future.”
John F. Kennedy
“I have a theory that the truth is never told during the nine-to-five hours.”
Hunter S. Thompson
It’s been a few years in the making, but finally I’ve got my shit together to create a blog. The reason for beginning with the two quotes, is to reflect my own current ideas. JKF’s pearler about the future hits the nail on the head for me – like a shark that dies when it stops swimming, our civilisation is one built on moving ahead toward… well, something. I won’t get all philosophical about what that something is, but I will say that everything (whether it’s digital or actual life) is moving toward a future.
And the Hunter S Thompson quote? Apart for revering the Dr as much as any young journalist does, this quote illustrates perfectly that truth, integrity and transparency is a hard thing to find these days, especially when profit is involved (see Rupert Murdoch today).
Having a blog can potentially be one of the greatest reflections of one’s ego that’s possible in today’s digital world. By contributing to the ever-crowded blogosphere, you’re effectively telling the world that you have something to say that’s worth reading. But, rather than being an exercise in self-importance, this blog is aimed at sharing ideas on the present and of the subjects that interest me and that I involve myself in: the media, digital publishing, communications and cross-platform content.
Dusted through these ideas will be things observed or experienced in everyday life that have a bearing on the way I see the world in which these subjects appear – great microbreweries, legendary sporting campaigns and the highs/lows of modern travel.
Like both quotes, I aim to depict the present as it becomes the future, while remembering that for many truth has a price. So why have I called this blog Songs for the Damned? Because while I may ridiculed or criticised for what I may write on this site, what I write will be with integrity and to the best of my research/knowledge – my many songs for those who dedicate part of their lives to digital, media, communications the world over.
So, avoiding the ostentatious, here we go.
